LLANO MASTER GARDENERS - NEW WEB SITE

Llano LogoVisit Llano Master Gardeners new web site. It is a clean cut and well designed site with a lot of good garden links and information. Check out all the links specific to Llano county, horticultural links, and seed and Photo Lisa Millerplant companies operating in Texas. The 'links' link is on the bottom navbar on every page. The plan is to offer new content on a regular basis to avoid that 'been there saw that' syndrome so common to web sites. The plan is to publish about the same number of new links each month. 'Archives' will take you to last month's links. Lisa Miller, Llano County Master Gardener  created, designed and maintains the web site.

OAK WILT SPECIALIST PROGRAM CHANGE

Photo Oak WiltAs of August 31, 2007, the Master Gardener Oak Wilt Specialist program will change to a *certificate of completion* program sponsored by the Texas Forest Service (TFS) in coordination with local County Extension offices. Volunteer service will not be required to obtain a certificate of completion for participating in Texas Forest Service training events on oak wilt. The reasons for this change include: the urgent need to disseminate accurate oak wilt information to the public; the ability of the Master Gardener network to help meet this need; and the stifling effect that tracking volunteer service has on significantly increasing the number of oak wilt-trained Master Gardeners. Texas Forest Service staff will continue to provide training opportunities in oak wilt through coordination with County Extension Agents for Master Gardeners and Master Naturalists. A certificate of completion will be issued by the TFS to volunteers who participate in these trainings. Costs, fees, and expenses for any oak wilt training will be determined and addressed at the county level between the TFS staff and County Extension agent. A great internet resource for oak wilt information and educational resources is: http:// www.texasoakwilt.org

LAKE GRANBURY MASTER GARDENERS

As work progresses on the LAKE GRANBURY MASTER GARDENERS DEMONSTRATION GARDEN, attention is being directed to the planned rose garden section. Earlier this year, approval was received to incorporate an EarthKind Rose Test Site into the garden plans. The trial bed will follow the EarthKind development program guidelines presented by Dr. Steve George. Our Hood County residents will be provided with first hand knowledge of how plants are ultimately selected for the EarthKind classification. The initial bed location was reviewed by Marty Vahlenkamp, Hood County Extension Agent, Arnold Blaylock, Demonstration Garden Chairman, and Gary Wiley, EarthKind Rose Coordinator. Bed preparation included a soil sample, and the addition of 3 inches of cotton burr compost and 3 inches of expanded shale tilled into 6 inches of native soil. Total bed dimensions will be 21 by 85 feet. Pending the selection of the specific rose “candidates” by Dr. George, planting is expected to take place in October. We’re very excited to be part of this program! http://www.hoodcountymastergardeners.org
