Mar, 2008 - JMG/HEB Promotional Program - Plant Sales - HEB Stores
The HEB stores in Austin, San Antonio, Waco, Laredo, Mission, Victoria and Corpus Christi will be the stores in this pilot program
The HEB Promotional Program is now complete and ready for launch planning. The information necessary for local Master Gardener Groups to contact their local HEB is contained in the xls. attachment. The Promotional plant tags, a store banner and a poster is also attached.
I ask all Master Gardeners to use this information to publicize this program as much as possible. I also Call on All Master Gardeners to BUY THESE PLANTS! I ask you to ask your friends to BUY THESE PLANTS! Remember every plant sold represents One Dollar to the JMG Program up to $25,000. Lets get every dollar!
Please go set up the launch activities with these stores. Please email me me when your plans are complete with a short description of planned activities. This will be the first of many great opportunities with a great new partner HEB.

Master Gardeners are encouraged to assist at Roll Out Stores with advice, public education and JMG Activities such as Suck A Bug or PlantZilla Neck Pets. Other suggestions include:
- 1.Tomato Growth from How to Plant to Fertilization
- 2.Distribute Any supportive Extension Documents on Tomatoes
- 3.Distribute Information on How to become a Master Gardener
- 4.Distribute Any JMG and Contact Information for the JMG Program.
These are only suggestions, everyone should take the initiative and develop a program with your local contact at your local store.
This activity will give the JMG,Master Gardeners, And the Extension Service positive exposure in their local communities.

- Program - 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Featured speakers: Dr. Bill Knoop,Professor Emeritus, Texas A & M University, speaking on lawn care and Daniel Duncum, District Urban Forester, Texas Forestry Service, speaking on landscape tree management. Both speakers will be available for questions following their talks.
- There will be booths staffed by the Wood County Master Gardeners with gardening information on local projects including the Wildscape and Sensory Gardens at the Mineola Nature Preserve and the Gov. Hogg Park Arboretum and Botanical Gardens being developed in Quitman.
- There will also be vendors with plant and garden related items available for sale before the program starts and during breaks.

MAR 15-16, 2008 - SPRING VEGGIE SALE & SEMINAR - Belton, TX
Bell County Master Gardeners plan a two-day spring veggie sale event Saturday, March 15th, 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. and Sunday, March 16th, 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Vegetables suitable for our Central Texas climate have been chosen. Visitors to the sale can select from 13 varieties of tomatoes, 4 varieties of peppers, 2 varieties of cucumbers and 5 varieties of squash. Master Gardener interns started the plants from seed in a special soil mix concocted by Greenhouse Coordinator Lawrence Cox. Mr. Cox, a master gardener since 2000 and 45- year veteran in the nursery and landscaping field, serves as a mentor to the new class of interns and the certified master gardeners as well. His considerable horticultural knowledge continues to improve the production and plant quality at the master gardener greenhouse. He and other master gardeners will be available to provide advice on planting techniques and information on growing requirements for a successful spring vegetable garden.
Two seminars will be presented, on Saturday, “Spring Vegetable Gardening” at 10 a. m. and “Control of Garden Pests” at 11 a.m. Bluebonnets and Indian Blankets will also be offered.
The master gardener greenhouse is located at the AgriLife Extension Office, 1605 North Main, Belton, Texas. The event will be held at the Walker County Master Gardener Greenhouse and Demonstration Gardens at 102 TAM Road (located at the corner of Highway 75 North and TAM Road) in Huntsville. The Extension Office is approximately 2 miles north of the Pilot Truck Stop on Highway 75 North. For the Love of Trees is the theme of this seminar. General, basic information will be covered. ISA Certified Arborist, Jerry Naiser, will discuss Tree Varieties for Central Texas. Learn about shade and ornamental trees that love the challenge of living in the various soils found in the Austin area and will tolerate the temperamental climate. He will discuss selecting the right tree for the right location, which includes considering: rate of growth, longevity, deciduous or evergreen, and size.
Do you know how to correctly Plant a Tree or Shrub? How big should the hole be, fertilize, soil amended, water schedule? Gain knowledge of the principles needed to ensure the plant’s health and success.

The Fannin County Master Gardeners’ fourth annual Garden, Lawn & Home Expo in Bonham, is set for Saturday, March 29st from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. at the Multi Purpose Complex on Hwy 56 W at 700 FM 87. Speakers include Jessie Gunn Stephens, author, Master Gardener and freelance journalist, Kimberly Schofield, Texas AgriLife Extension Service Program Specialist IPM, Jonathan Castro owner of Texoma Landscapes and Garden Center, and Matt Grubisich, Urban Forester with Texas Forestry Service. The Angeldina County Master Gardeners are holding their annual Plant Sale on Saturday March 29,2008 from 8am to 3pm at the Angelina County Farmers Market on the loop in Lufkin, Texas. We hope some of you will be their to help us raise funds to support the projects and programs for the whole East Texas Community. We've been propogating all our favorite proven performers in our new green house and having a ball. Hope to see you there. |
